UNESCO Global geoparks Council has recently issued a document and decided to award green card to Shilin global geopark with some recommendations.
Global Geopark Network was officially established in 2004, and as of last year there are altogether 119 global geopark members around the world. Shilin was one of the first batch of global geoparks in 2004. According to the related regulations, each geopark should go through periodical revalidation every four years, in the aspect of geopark protection and management. Those which meet the standards will be awarded green card, if not, they will get a yellow card. Shilin global geopark has successfully passed revalidation for three times since it was inscribed as global geopark in 2004.Shilin geopark is extremely famous for its unique and outstanding forest-like karst landform. Shilin is the palce where the term Shilin (stone forest) origins.For many years the geopark with its geological relics was well and effectively protected with the general principle of “enforced protection,unified administration, rational exploitation and sustainable utilization ”. Some extra management measures have been adopted in line with local conditions.
The two experts from Norway and Greece spoke very highly of the park’s sustainable development, and both of them said that the trip to shilin geopark is really fantastic. During the next four years,we will improve our work and make shilin geopark much better with the recommendations from the UNESCO Geopark Council.
