From October 9th to 15th , 2024, the 8th International Training Course on UNESCO Global Geoparks Management and Development was held at Xiangxi Global Geopark, Hunan. The members of UNESCO with representatives from China, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania and other countries participated in this international training course.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Prof. Zhang Jianpin at the China University of Geosciences (Beijing) who is also the member of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council and the Executive Board of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. Other experts delivered opening speeches, they are Yan Chenggao, first-level inspector, working for Department of Nature Reserve Management, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, Kristof VANDENBERGHE, Secretary-general of UNESCO Global Geoparks Secretariat, and Jin xiaochi, the coordinator of APGN.
The training course was organized under the theme of “UNESCO Global Geoparks and Sustainable Development”. There were talks by experts, case analysis and field trips, through which the host involved all the participants in training and in-depth discussion on the concepts, standards, application, evaluation and revalidation of global geoparks to enhance the understanding of the development of a comprehensive strategy among the representatives.
During the training course, through a brief introduction of the current status, the management plan and the development of local cultural characteristics of Shilin, representatives of the Shilin UGGp increased understanding with different communities, learned from outstanding delegations and strengthened the relationship with other geoparks.
This training course is a great opportunity to expand our horizons, learn more managerial experience and enrich our knowledge of the criteria of UNESCO Global Geoparks. In accordance with this training course, we aim to constantly improve our management, construction and development capabilities in the future to make more contribution to the development and management of UNESCO Global Geoparks.
