What is the distribution situation of the geological heritages in China?
(1) Geological Heritage Preservation Area
According to the statistics in 1997, among the 86 geological heritage preservation areas of China, 12 at state level, 33 at provincial level, 9 at city level and 32 at county level. According to the new statistics from 22 provinces (municipality, district), there are newly established 52 geological heritage preservation areas, among them, 10 at state level, 19 at provincial level and 23 at city or county level; Planning to establish 325 geological heritage preservation areas with 67 at state-level, 162 at the provincial level and 96 at city or county level.
(2) Nature Conservation Area with Geological Contents
According to the statistics in 1992, among 606 nature conservation areas, there are 104 ones are with geological contents, including 27 at state level, 71 at provincial level and 6 at county level. Till the end of 1997, there are totally 296 nature conservation areas in China, including 160 ones with geological contents.
(3) Geological Heritage in National Scenic Spot
Among the 119 national scenic spots listed in state announcement, many of them are closely related with geological heritage, and are named under the famous mountains, rivers, lakes, caves, waterfall or springs, and seashore or islands, which are the main part of these scenic spots. More than half of the 512 scenic spots in China are related with the geological heritage.
(4) Geological Heritage in National Forest Park
Up to 1998, there had been 920 forest parks in China, including 295 ones at state level. The forest parks can be divided into the following types: mountain, lake, volcano, desert, glacier, island, seashore, limestone cave, hot spring, grassland and botanical garden. The first 9 kinds are related closely to the geological heritage with one or more than one heritage inside of the park. In addition, there are 15 Australopithecus and Palaeoanthropologic heritages belong to the geological heritage, among the four batches of National key cultural heritage protection units.
